Frequently asked questions

What share of Michigan business owners are nearing retirement?

In reference year 2023, 23.1% of owners of Michigan employer businesses who reported their age were 65 or older and 53.1% were 55 or older, according to the U.S. Census Bureau's Annual Business Survey. Nationally the figures were 23.1% and 51.3%.

How does Michigan compare with other states?

Michigan ranks 27th among the 50 states and DC by the share of owners aged 65 or older (1 is the oldest). The gap to the national share (+0.0 points) is within the survey's 90% margin of error (±1.4 points), so Michigan's owner base is statistically similar in age to the nation's.

Which Michigan industries have the oldest business owners?

Among construction, manufacturing, wholesale trade, transportation and warehousing, professional services, administrative and waste services, and health care, the highest 65+ share with an adequately precise estimate is in manufacturing (27.4%). The full sector table and CSV include every sector and its standard error.

Does this count businesses or owners?

Owners. The survey records up to four owners per employer firm, and the owner tables cover only firms that answered the owner questions. Shares are the reliable measure; the counts understate the full owner population.

Methodology and sources

Laurent Capital Research compiled this report from public U.S. Census Bureau statistics. The owner figures come from the Characteristics of Business Owners file of the 2024 Annual Business Survey (ABS), which covers reference year 2023 and is published as dataset ABSCBO2023 (data.census.gov table AB2300CSCBO). It is the latest ABS owner release available. We used the rows for all owners (no sex, ethnicity, race or veteran filter) at the national and state level, for all sectors and for each two-digit NAICS 2022 sector.

Unit of measure. The ABS counts owners, not firms. Each sampled employer firm reports on up to four people who own the largest stakes. The owner tables cover only firms that answered at least one owner question, and the Census Bureau applies no nonresponse adjustment to them, so counts understate the full owner population. We therefore lead with shares. The share of owners aged 55 or over is owners aged 55 to 64 plus owners aged 65 or over, divided by owners reporting an age (question OWNRAGE). The share aged 65 or over is computed the same way and matches the Census-published percentage.

Precision. We publish the Census standard error of every 65+ share. A state is described as above or below the national share only when the difference exceeds 1.645 times the combined standard error (90% confidence, treating the two estimates as independent). Sector cells with a standard error above 5 percentage points are marked as low precision and are not used to name a state's oldest-owner sector. Cells the Census Bureau withholds for quality or disclosure reasons are shown as suppressed; none of the state-level or B2B-sector 65+ cells used here were suppressed in the 2023 release.

Firm context. Counts of employer firms, employees and annual payroll, and the split by years in business, come from the ABS Company Summary (dataset ABSCS2023), which covers all employer firms rather than respondents only. The ABS does not publish employment or payroll by owner age, so this report does not estimate the number of jobs at firms with older owners. Firms in business 16 or more years are shown instead as a related, but different, measure of established companies.

Trend. The 2017 comparison uses the same question and definitions from dataset ABSCBO2017. Each ABS year is an independent sample, so year-to-year differences mix real change with sampling variation; small changes in individual states should not be over-read.

Sectors. We highlight seven sectors most relevant to business-to-business acquirers: construction (23), manufacturing (31-33), wholesale trade (42), transportation and warehousing (48-49), professional, scientific and technical services (54), administrative, support and waste management (56), and health care and social assistance (62). The ABS excludes some activities, including crop and animal production, rail transportation, postal service, and public administration, and covers employer firms only.
