Key findings

  • Vertical software & SaaS carries the highest median LTM EV/EBITDA, 32.5x, and IT services & managed services the lowest, 11.0x: a gap of 21.5 turns of EBITDA between the eight sectors.
  • Across the 100 companies with positive LTM EBITDA, the median EV/EBITDA is 16.1x; across all 104 companies in the statistics, the median EV/Revenue is 2.38x.
  • Revenue multiples vary with margin profiles: vertical software & SaaS trades at a median 6.69x revenue and IT services & managed services at 1.10x.
  • Dispersion matters as much as the median. The interquartile range of EV/EBITDA is widest in vertical software & SaaS (30.2x to 46.5x) and tightest in environmental services & solutions (16.0x to 19.1x).
  • Of the 113 companies reviewed, 4 under signed sale agreements, 4 below the $300 million size floor and 1 without a computable LTM period are shown in the tables but excluded from the statistics; 3 with negative LTM EBITDA count toward EV/Revenue only.

This page is updated monthly. Current vintage: share prices at the close on October 26, 2026; financials from each company's latest 10-Q or 10-K filed by that date.

How to use public comps for a private company

Public trading multiples are the most visible valuation data and, for a lower-middle-market business, the least directly applicable. Used with care they answer two useful questions: how investors currently rank one sector against another, and whether a sector has re-rated up or down since the last time an owner looked.

  1. Pick the closest companies, not the whole sector. Within each table, the companies whose business model, end markets and margins resemble yours are more relevant than the sector median. A specialty distributor with value-added services is closer to some peers than to others.
  2. Use the range, not one number. The interquartile range shows where the middle half of the peer set trades. Growth, margin and recurring revenue usually explain where a company sits within it.
  3. Match the EBITDA definitions. The figures here use unadjusted GAAP EBITDA. A private company's EBITDA is usually presented after adjustments for owner compensation and one-time items, which buyers will test in diligence. Compare like with like.
  4. Account for size and liquidity. Private lower-middle-market companies typically sell at lower multiples than their public peers, reflecting smaller scale, concentration and key-person risk, and the absence of a liquid market for the shares. The size of that gap varies by sector, company size, growth and credit conditions; we do not reduce it to a single percentage. Our guide to valuation multiples in the lower middle market covers private-market ranges and the size effect in detail.
  5. Cross-check with transactions and financing. Precedent private transactions, adjusted for size and timing, and the leverage lenders will currently provide are usually better anchors for a sale price than any public multiple.

Frequently asked questions

Can I apply these public multiples to my own company?

Not directly. Public multiples describe what investors pay for small, liquid minority stakes in companies that are usually many times larger than a lower-middle-market business. They are a useful indication of whether a sector is in or out of favor and of how buyers rank sectors against each other. A private company's value is better estimated from precedent private transactions, what financial buyers can fund at current lending terms, and the company's own growth, margins and customer concentration.

Why do private companies usually sell for less than public peers?

Public companies tend to be larger, more diversified and easier to sell, with deeper management teams and cheaper access to capital. Smaller private companies carry more key-person, customer and execution risk, and their owners cannot sell a few shares on an exchange. Buyers price those differences in. How large the gap is varies by sector, size, growth and market conditions, so we do not publish a single discount figure.

Why is the EBITDA here different from the adjusted EBITDA a company reports?

We compute EBITDA the same way for every company, from audited or reviewed GAAP figures: operating income plus depreciation and amortization. We do not add back stock-based compensation, restructuring, acquisition costs or impairments, because each company defines its adjustments differently. Companies with large stock-based compensation, notably software companies, therefore show higher EV/EBITDA here than on an adjusted basis.

Why are some companies shown but left out of the medians?

Companies that have signed an agreement to be acquired trade on the deal price rather than on their own prospects, so they are excluded until they delist. Companies with an equity value below $300 million on the as-of date fall under our selection floor. Companies with negative LTM EBITDA have no meaningful EV/EBITDA and are excluded from that statistic only; their EV/Revenue still counts.

How often is this updated?

Monthly. Each update reprices every company at the closing price on the update date, picks up any 10-Q or 10-K filed since the previous update and recomputes the medians. The as-of date at the top of the page and in the CSV identifies the vintage. The peer list changes only through documented additions and removals, for example when a company is acquired.

Can I use these figures in an article or report?

Yes. The data is published under a Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 license. Please cite Laurent Capital Research and link to this page; the citation box below gives a ready-made reference. The CSV contains every input, so figures can be checked or recomputed.

Methodology and sources

Peer selection. For each of the eight sectors in which Laurent Capital advises, we list up to 15 companies that are headquartered in the United States or Canada, trade on the NYSE or Nasdaq, file 10-K and 10-Q reports with the SEC in US GAAP, and derive most of their revenue from the sector's core activity as described in their annual report. Where more candidates qualified, we kept the most direct comparables to lower-middle-market businesses: focused operators over diversified conglomerates. The selection is a judgment and is published in full; companies that fail a rule stay visible in the tables with the reason. Canadian companies that report under IFRS on Form 40-F are not included because their filings do not provide comparable quarterly XBRL data.

Exclusions from the statistics. A company is excluded when its equity value is below $300 million on the as-of date, when it has signed an agreement to be acquired (detected from merger proxy filings and confirmed by reading the proxy), or when a trailing-twelve-month figure cannot be built from its filings. Companies with zero or negative LTM EBITDA are excluded from the EV/EBITDA statistics only.

Last twelve months (LTM). For each company, the LTM period ends on the balance-sheet date of its latest 10-Q or 10-K filed by the as-of date. LTM figures equal the last fiscal year plus the current year-to-date period minus the prior-year year-to-date period, all taken from XBRL-tagged filings. Fiscal year-ends differ, so LTM periods differ by company; each row shows its own period end.

EBITDA. LTM GAAP operating income plus LTM depreciation and amortization from the cash flow statement. No adjustments are made for stock-based compensation, restructuring, acquisition costs or impairments. Where a company does not tag an operating income line, we use pre-tax income plus interest expense (ESE, KD, EHC, ACHC; identified in the CSV). Where depreciation and amortization cannot be taken from standard tags, EBITDA is shown as not available.

Enterprise value. EV = share price × shares outstanding + total debt + noncontrolling interests + preferred stock − cash, cash equivalents and short-term investments. Total debt includes the current portion of long-term debt, short-term borrowings and commercial paper, and finance leases where the company reports them within its debt total; operating lease liabilities are excluded. Balance-sheet items are taken at the LTM period end. Shares outstanding are the cover-page count from the latest 10-Q or 10-K; where the cover page does not give a single total that can be read from XBRL (usually because the company has several share classes), we use diluted weighted-average shares for the latest quarter; the CSV records which basis applies.

Statistics. Medians and quartiles are computed by linear interpolation between ranked values (the method used by Excel's QUARTILE.INC). All figures are in US dollars.

Limits. XBRL tags are applied by each filer and are not always consistent; we use a fixed order of standard tags and record the tags used for every company in the CSV. We do not adjust for cash held outside the US, pension deficits, or acquisitions closed after the LTM period end.
